Our year in review.

Sep 2023 – Aug 2024

We believe God has big plans for our town, for our nation and the nations, and we want to play our part. Over the last three years we have seen God transform lives and bring hope and healing where there was none. People have been added to the church family, joining the vision to be a family on a mission — a God First, Gospel Centred, Mission Focused family.

Let’s go into this new year, grateful for all God has done, and believing there is more for us in the year ahead.

This annual report is designed to provide some visibility into what is happening in the life of the church, our finances and what God is doing in this family.

As you read through this report, we hope you are reminded of the many lives in Worthing and those around the world that have been impacted because of your generosity, your prayers, and your support. Let’s keep going!

Groups.

We've been excited to see more people joining us over the last year. This has meant more people on Sundays and also the need for more groups where people can be connected to one another and connected to God. If you are interested in serving the church by leading a group in the future, come and speak to Arron or one of the elders.

One of the groups we have run has been specifically for international people, many of whom had moved to Worthing in the last year or so. Listen to John and Esther's experience of coming along to Redeemer and finding family.

Over 3 terms, we had 32 groups, an average of 10-11 groups per term.

As well as our regular groups, we ran the Marriage Course, CAP Budgeting Course, Internationals group, Mum's Prayer and more.

Community projects.

Redeemer Tots

On Monday mornings during term time, we have run Redeemer Tots, a space for parents, carers, babies and toddlers to catch up and have fun! This has been a great opportunity to serve our town, welcoming up to 50 under 5s into our space each week, building relationships with parents, grandparents and carers, showing something of the love of Jesus and pointing them to other events that we have going on. It’s been very exciting to see people visit Redeemer through Tots, and we are trusting that we will have more this coming year. If you can make some time on a Monday morning to come and have some fun, serve our Worthing community and make some new friends, talk to Maddie McDonagh.

Foodbank

A need for our Foodbank has sadly increased this year due to the continued rise in the cost of essential items, feeding 3,229 people including 853 children. We launched the ‘Bankthefood’ app which allows people to see exactly what food we are in need of which is helping to keep our food items in stock. We received a large donation from a local charity and were able to do 150 Christmas hampers for our Foodbank clients over the festive period. We also welcomed a member of CAP, who joins our team on a Friday, to give debt advice to our clients. Although we would rather not be here, we are pleased we can support those in our community who are in crisis. Please continue to support our Foodbank, pray for our volunteers and pray for our community.

Fernbank, Berkeley Lodge and Tarring Manor

A team of us continue leading a monthly service at Fernbank Residential Home, and we also have teams going into Berkeley Lodge and Tarring Manor. The residents are very appreciative, as are the staff. We're building good relationships and are able to share experiences from our church life and theirs. For many, that means Sunday school memories. They are as much a blessing to us as we are to them. We pray for each person that, through seeing our evident love for Jesus and for them, they will want to know Jesus personally.

English language classes

Free English classes have now been running at the Guildbourne for two years, taught by Sue Haggar and Malcolm Lyon. This past year we welcomed around fifteen students in total, on Thursday mornings during term time from 10am – 12 noon. The students were at beginner level and came from Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Brazil, Egypt, Italy, Ivory Coast, the Philippines, Taiwan and Venezuela. We provide a welcoming and friendly environment for people in our community who may often feel unwelcome or marginalised, helping them to improve their English while showing them the love of God.

Gather '24.

Gather '24 had it all! Rain, wind, (some sun), BBQs, bouncy castles, camp fires... and much more! It was so good to gather as three churches together, joined by others from Regions Beyond. We loved having Victory Hill come down and join us from Edinburgh; Kim, Smile, Gino and Louvee fly all the way from the Philippines to be part of it; and Fusi and Andy coming to speak over the weekend — what a privilege to be part of this family.

As well as hearing stories of God calling people to the nations and their neighbours, of healings, and people being filled with the Holy Spirit; we have also heard again and again about the sense of family that people experienced being together over that weekend.

My favourite thing about Gather was...

"Having fun on the bouncy castles with my friends"

"All of us being together as one family"

"Getting to know the church family and feeling like you belong"

Finances.

With our money, along with everything else, we desire to put God first. Thank you so much for your generosity — being faith-filled, cheerful givers. As elders and trustees, we want to steward the money we are given well, whilst being full of faith for what we believe God is calling us to. This has lead to us ending this year with a slight surplus (thank you God!) which means we can save some money for future needs, whether that be building related, planting churches or sending people to the nations. Thank you so much for playing your part in that.

If you are part of this church family and aren't currently giving, we encourage you to give regularly and generously. We are all on a journey in learning to steward what God has given us, holding our money lightly. For those regularly giving to what we are doing as a church, why not review your finances at the start of this new academic year. And whatever we give, let's do it joyfully and for God's glory!

Guildbourne refurbishment loans.

During our refurbishment of the Guildbourne Centre, some people generously loaned us money to help us complete the second phase of the project. We're pleased to say we have now paid off all loans, partly thanks to the success of Rooms, and generous giving from the church. You can see below the original loan amount below.
